Hua Tao: An Exhibition of the Beauty in Life and Culture

華陶窯創建於民國73年(西元1984年),位於苗栗苑裡鎮火炎山西側的半山腰,透過文創規劃為一座生態保育,兼容陶、窯、古詩詞造景於山徑牆角婉約間之民俗建築;同時蘊涵文化、藝術、觀光、生態保育之人文窯場。

華陶窯,「華」為花的古字,顧名思義一處融合花、陶、臺灣民俗建築及風土景觀,從而建構出以展現臺灣之美的「花」、「陶」、「窯」、「空間美學」之本土文化意涵的柴燒窯場。華陶窯從早期生產花器的陶藝工作室開始,迄今已歷三十年,截至目前吸引人到訪的不僅是一座窯或層疊相間的亭臺樓閣的人文園林,而是整個園區內所散發濃厚的島嶼多文化相融的客家在地生活美學。

為推廣陶藝與花藝生活美學,本展覽邀請華陶窯團隊共同策辦主題特展,分享華陶窯三十多年來的文創經驗,呈現臺灣柴燒陶與人文生活美學的風貌。
  展區入口以竹編、花藝等造景呈現窯區人文與自然結合的景致,讓觀者一踏入展場即感受土地、人與環境融合的美感。展場一部分以窯區的七百多種臺灣原生植物圖像製成輸出掛圖做成展區吊屏,讓觀賞者了解創作者的滋養根源;另一區域規劃陶器展,展出陶藝家以泥土為媒材對自然的書寫,以寫意的花器及生活陶創作,呈現出華陶窯的特色。

The Hwataoyao was established in 1984 on the west side of the Huoyanshan Mountain in Yuanli County, Miaoli. Through the cultural creation, the Hwataoyao created a natural reserve where ceramics, kilns, and gardens designed based on ancient poems coexist with traditional buildings located alongside roads snaking around the mountain. The natural reserve is a cultural spot which incorporates culture with art, tourism, and natural preservation.
 
Hwa (華) is the ancient word for flowers. Just as indicated by its name, Hwataoyao is a place integrating flowers (Hwa), ceramics (tao) and Taiwanese traditional buildings (yao), which together form a wood-burning kiln showcasing the artistic spirits of flowers, ceramics, kilns and the aesthetics of space in the local culture.
Starting from producing ceramic flowerpots, the Hwataoyao has attracted visitors to a place that is not just a kiln or a forest of traditional buildings, but a place where the aesthetics of Hakka life created by different cultures on the island merge.
 
In order to promote ceramic art and the aesthetics of floristry in life, the organizers have invited Hwataoyao to co-organize a special exhibition, sharing its thirty-year experience of cultural creation and presenting Humanities and Culture, as well as ceramic works created in wood-burning kilns.
Placed at the entrance are some decorative arts made by bamboo weaving and floral design, which paint a picture of humanities and culture combined with nature, allowing visitors to feel the aesthetics of the combination of land, humans and the environment immediately after they step into the venue. A hanging display with images of over 700 indigenous plants takes up part of the exhibition so visitors can understand the creators’ inspiration. Another area is dedicated to the display of ceramics, showing how ceramic artists record nature using clay. With flowerpots and ceramics used in daily life, the exhibition demonstrates the characteristics of Hwataoyao.
 
Anyone who loves ceramics and the aesthetics of life are welcome to visit the Taichung City Seaport Art Center to appreciate Hwataoyao’s perseverance over the past thirty years and feel its love for the land.

Nanguan Music: Zhaojun’s Political Marriage with the Xiongnu

由重要傳統藝術林吳素霞藝師帶領合和藝苑團員演出,成立於1993年的合和藝苑,以倡導南管古樂和七子戲(小梨園)為宗旨,對傳統文化之推展保存、教材編彚、劇本整理、培訓古樂演奏、演唱及演藝人才,爲日益式微薪傳不易的南管界,注入新血輪、新脈絡,是目前國內唯一演出本土南管戲的團體。
 
合和藝苑向以傳統南樂典雅古樸的「唱腔」與七仔戲柔美細膩的「科步」為其演出特色,承續小梨園之演藝風格,所推出的作品不論是傳統經典劇作或新編詩歌小品,均廣受好評,並以其獨特的藝術理想與實踐成果,於每年的年度表演、巡迴表演時與當地南管樂團的交流切磋中盡現無遺,不但引領觀眾感受不同戲曲風貌,也領略其精緻豐富的內涵。

This play will be led by the important traditional artist Lin Wu Xusia and performed by Hehe Art Troupe, which was established in 1993. With its main goal of promoting classical Nanguan music and Qizixi, a kind of play with the longest history in Minnan culture, the troupe has devoted itself to the preservation of traditional culture, the production of teaching materials, the compilation of scripts and the training of classical music and actors thus instilling new power into Nanguan music, which is hard to teach or pass down to the next generation. The troupe is also the only local group capable of staging Nanguan musical theater in Taiwan.
 
Hehe Art Troupe is characterized by its classical way of singing and elegant way of performing Kebu, a kind of special dance step in Qizixi. Since it has preserved the performing style of traditional Qizixi, all the work they have done, no matter whether classical plays or newly adapted short poems, has received critical acclaim. The group also proactively interacts with other Nanguan groups during the annual tour while realizing its ideology and fulfilling its goals. Via its performance, the group not only gives the audience a chance to catch a glimpse of different aspects of Nanguan music, but also gives them a deeper understanding of its enriched and refined contents.

磐宇木偶劇團《先天媽祖驅魔令》
Mazu Evicting the Evil by Pan Yu Puppet Troupe

磐宇木偶劇團於1974年由王文生創立,前身為聲五洲第三掌中劇團,後更名為「磐宇木偶劇團」;發源於布袋戲宗師-黃海岱先生,師事林瓊琪老師,為「五洲園」第三代之傳承,承襲布袋戲之:戲劇、文學、說書、哲理、操偶、雕刻、音樂、繪畫等技藝精隨,堪稱「八藝乾坤盡現掌中」。本團成立宗旨在於延續、保存偶戲傳統藝術之美,宣揚優良的道德精神。在偶戲保存與創作上,期盼達到「承先啟後」的作用。本團自編自導諸多戲碼,於台灣南北四處對台戲,皆獲勝連連。由於不足不滿於自己的藝術工具,團長開始臨摹大師加走先生的木偶,自己期望能有表現優良的演出精緻度、以期能將此傳統雕塑技術延續下去,隨著仿造木偶的技巧逐漸提升,也摻進了自身情感的表露,在每一次主演兼操偶的情況下,慢慢去塑造出個人風格的木偶造型,也創造出許多屬於本團的木偶。
但隨著時代變遷、科技快速變化而造成傳統布袋戲沒落,為求改善傳統技藝之沒落,致力於琢磨主演技巧「五音明辦」、開創刻偶手法「一刀流」、專研多項樂器「保留傳統」、結合數位科技「設計創新」等發展方式延續文化薪傳,具有在地性、獨特性,為台灣少見的全能型劇團。
 
Established by Wang Wensheng, the troupe changed its name from Sheng Wu Chou Puppet Troupe to PanYu Puppet Troupe. Beginning with the puppet master Huang Haidai, the troupe is now in its third generation, and its members learn puppetry techniques from Lin Qiongqi, inheriting the essence of traditional puppet-theater, literature, storytelling, philosophy, puppet control, sculpture, music and painting, which is why people describe the traditional puppet as a form of art which allows a performer to “demonstrate multiple skills with one hand.”
The purpose of the establishment of the group is to pass down and preserve the beauty of traditional arts while promoting decent moral values. In terms of the preservation and creation of traditional puppets, the troupe hopes it can inherit the wisdom of the previous generation and inspire the next generation. It also produces and directs a large number of original works, winning many competitions in Taiwan. Not being complacent about its artistic equipment, the troupe leader started improving his skills by copying puppets made by Chinese master Jian Jiazou, hoping to not only enhance the quality of the troupe’s performances but also to preserve and pass down the traditional crafting skills. As he made improvements along the way, he also integrated his own feelings into the puppets and gradually created puppets of his own style. He also made several unique puppets exclusive to the troupe.
 
However, as time flew by, the advances in technology began to overshadow traditional puppetry. In order to save traditional puppetry from faltering, the troupe focuses on refining a special performance skill called “the distinction of the five tones” and developing its own puppet crafting skill “one-sword school” while at the same time learning different kinds of instruments to preserve the tradition. By applying digital technologies to design and innovation, the troupe helps pass down the culture and has become a masterful troupe with local appeal and distinctiveness, which is rarely seen in Taiwan.
